tamil doll, global problem.
Based in Brooklyn, the trans Tamil American DJ, producer and vocalist remixes the songs that raised her into the songs she wanted to dance to. Nobody sits down. Some of the records are hers. hmph flips a Tamil song called Honey Honey into jersey club. THIMIRU is hers too. Apple Music editorial picked up STOP&STARE, her own voice on the record.
Stage 4 cancer at nine, five relapses by seventeen. For most of that decade a pair of headphones was what held her together, and she has been playing those records back ever since.
Now she plays the rooms she once couldn’t see herself in. In New York that is Elsewhere and Public Records. In March it was SXSW’s South Asian House, with Rinse France and The Lot Radio airing her guest mixes.
Rani’s Room
SRI’s own party. Trans, queer and femme lineups, global club all night, for the ranis.
It started in her bedroom a year ago, moved through apartments and a rooftop, and packed Mood Ring in June.
Not a South Asian party. Artists get booked for their perspective on global club music. Elaichi Global produces it, the company SRI runs with her partner to build community through shared roots.
